As any sportsman knows, warming up before undertaking exercise is very important to prevent muscle strains and tears. This is even more so important in children with Cerebral Palsy or brain injury problems where the muscles may be already strained or tight.

Before therapy starts, children start each session with a massage and if appropriate, warm gels.

The massage helps to relax the children both physically and mentally, an experience that most children find enjoyable.

Muscles that are particularly tight or not relaxed may be targeted with warm gel packs. The gel packs are used in many areas of medicine and are also very popular among sports physiotherapists.

The gel pack is warmed and applied to specific muscles, the introduction of gentle heat helping to relax the muscles.

While not a therapy in its own right, massage and gels is an essential precursor to each session.
